Before we address the questions of how exactly you can hang velvet curtains and drapes correctly, it is important to consider what types of curtain rods there are. Depending on which type of curtain rod you choose, it will be installed in a different way. Curtain rods can differ in the type of attachment, length and design. In general, you can differentiate between round tube curtain rods and curtain rods with an inner track. Below I would like to go into more detail about the two variants.

The round tube curtain rod – the classic

The round tube rod is one of the classic curtain rods . These poles are available in countless variations. On the one hand, it can be a sturdy pole, or you can use lighter tubes. Curtains and curtains are then attached to the rod using special curtain rings or curtain hooks . Some curtains already have loops through which the pipe can be passed.

Curtain rods with inner runner

Attach curtain rods without drilling

The last option is to install the curtain rod without drilling. You can't always easily drill into ceilings and walls. If you live in a rented apartment, a no-drilling installation method is usually a better idea. You have different options for attaching the curtain rod without drilling . There are sliding curtain rods that are clamped into the window frame. The curtain is attached directly to the window on the clamping rod. A so-called tension display is particularly practical if you want to attach small, lighter curtains to the window. The vitrage is clamped into the window and can then be precisely adjusted using a telescopic mechanism.

The appropriate length of the curtain rod

If you choose the standard curtain rod model, the question that arises before purchasing and installing is how long the rod should be. In order to find out, it is of course important to know how long the windows are on which a curtain or curtain is to be mounted. When choosing the length, an excess is always added. The sum gives you the length you need. You must not include the decorative elements that are at the ends of the curtain rod. You will find the right end pieces for every curtain rod . If you add a little more overhang, you can visually stretch your window a little. You should not plan for an overhang of less than ten centimeters on each side.

The right length of the curtains

Once you have found curtains in the right fabric, color and pattern, you will want to order and hang the curtain straight away. But be careful: You should also pay attention to the length of the curtain so that your curtains can have the desired effect. 

In addition to the color, shape and type of curtain, the length plays a significant role in the effect of the curtain. A room can quickly appear uncomfortable if the curtain is too long or too short. The length also influences the effect of the curtain on the room. 

Determine the current length

There is actually no such thing as the “right” curtain length: there is no must or should here. But we have some tips for you so that your curtains not only decorate your windows optimally, but can also develop their effect and support the room climate. The range from “a few centimeters too short” to “much too long” is wide.

Measure the length straight down from the middle of the curtain rod. Please note the method of hanging the curtain:

• For eyelet scarves, the distance from the top hem edge to the eyelet ring is usually around two centimeters. 
• With loop curtains , the loops also count towards the curtain length. In this variant, the distance to the ground should be between one and two centimeters.
